Predictably unpredictable: Why I loved Big Hero 6

Disney delivers a slam dunk home run touchdown goal with Big Hero 6, an animated film based on the Marvel comic. This film is Disney’s finest CGI work to date, in my opinion, and my second favorite film of 2014. My first? Guardians Of the Galaxy, of course!

Before I dive in let me tell you that I have never read the source material, so there was no comparing it.

That said, this was a very predictable story.

That said, it was totally unpredictable!

Oh, and before I go on, there might be a spoiler or two in your future, so read on at your own risk.

Big Hero opens in the city of San Fransokyo, and is about a 14 year-old genius robotics expert named Hiro Hamada. He’s young, impetuous, and just needs some guidance in his life. Enter big brother Tadashi.

Tadashi nudges Hiro into trying out for a place at the University Robotics lab, which is run by Hiro’s hero, Professor Callaghan. So far, this story just plays out like all the other great Japanese anime I have grown up with.

And, a lot like those fine films, Hiro suffers a great loss. He loses his way. But it thanks to his brother’s prototype robot that he is able to… stumble upon an evil mastermind hatching a plot using Hiro’s own tech!

And then the roller coaster drops us down the first hill!

Hiro sets out on an adventure to seek justice and revenge, and finds friendship and hope.

Some of the story is predictable, as I said. But that’s what makes it so much fun!

There are twists no one expected as well, especially when Hiro also goes off the deep end at one point, making a rash decision that no one watching a Disney film would expect. In fact, this was a pretty significant surprise for me, and made me wonder why the movie got just a PG rating. I do think parents of younger children should give this some thought before taking the tykes to see it.

Otherwise, it was a fantastic ride that ended at the station with you wanting to get on and ride again!

Big Hero 6 is no slouch in the art department either! There had better be an award or two in their future for creating the world Hiro lives in.

As I said, Big Hero 6 is based on a Marvel comic, by Man of Action. Folks, this is DEFINITELY a Marvel movie! Watch closely for that all-to-familiar cameo, and… DON’T LEAVE BEFORE THE CREDITS END!! ‘Nuff said.
